COVAX alliance supplies first COVID-19 vaccines doses to Ghana

BBC News reported on Wednesday that Ghana has become the first recipient of COVID-19 vaccine doses distributed by the global vaccine sharing initiative, COVAX.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) and UNICEF said that a plane carrying 600,000 doses of the of the AstraZeneca/Oxford COVID-19 vaccine landed in the Ghana capital city Accra, on 24 February 2021 .

In a statement, the WHO and UNICEF said: "These 600,000 COVAX vaccines are part of an initial tranche of deliveries ... which represent part of the first wave of COVID vaccines headed to several low and middle-income countries."

According to the ministry of information of Ghana, priority in vaccination will be given to health workers, the elderly above 60 years and people with underlying health conditions.

Others to receive the shots are selected members of the executive, legislature, judiciary and their related staff, front line security personnel, some religious leaders, essential workers and teachers, the BBC added.
