Healthcare technology company Medtronic (NYSE: MDT) announced on Wednesday that it has received US Food and Drug Administration clearance for its LigaSure RAS Maryland jaw device for use with the Hugo robotic-assisted surgery system, expanding the instruments available to US surgeons.
Medtronic said the instrument combines robotic surgery with Medtronic's vessel-sealing technology, which has been used in more than 45 million procedures across more than 65 countries. Designed for use with the Valleylab FT10 energy platform, it seals and cuts vessels, thick tissue and lymphatics up to 7mm in diameter.
The Hugo RAS system is currently cleared for urologic procedures in the US, with Medtronic progressing plans to expand its indications to general and gynecologic surgery. The LigaSure RAS Maryland instrument was introduced on the Hugo system in Europe in 2025 following CE Mark approval.
