Insulin delivery company MiniMed (NASDAQ: MMED) announced on Wednesday that it has expanded its partnership with medical device and health care company Abbott to commercialise dual glucose-ketone sensors that will integrate exclusively with MiniMed's smart insulin dosing systems, broadening sensor options across its automated insulin delivery and Smart MDI platforms.
The new sensors, manufactured by Abbott, are designed to provide continuous monitoring of both glucose and ketone levels, enabling earlier detection of rising ketones and helping reduce the risk of diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA), a potentially life-threatening diabetes complication. The devices will match the size of the Instinct sensor, which is currently marketed as the world's smallest and thinnest sensor.
By combining real-time glucose and ketone data within MiniMed's dosing algorithms, the technology is intended to enhance patient safety through earlier alerts and intervention before DKA develops. Currently, ketone monitoring typically requires separate blood or urine testing, often performed only after symptoms emerge.
The agreement builds on the companies' existing collaboration around the Instinct sensor and is expected to expand choice for people with type 1 and insulin-requiring type 2 diabetes using MiniMed systems. Abbott's dual glucose-ketone technology recently received CE Mark approval and remains under review by the US Food and Drug Administration.
