Aptamer Group launches Optimer-based Ebola diagnostic programme
8 July 2026 -

Biotechnology company Aptamer Group plc (AIM: APTA) announced on Wednesday that it has commenced development of Optimer binders for a potential rapid diagnostic test targeting the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola virus, addressing a critical need for improved detection during the largest recorded outbreak of the rare strain.

The programme aims to develop field-compatible diagnostic solutions using Aptamer's synthetic binder technology, which has previously demonstrated rapid and sensitive responses in infectious disease applications, including the development of SARS-CoV-2 binders during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Aptamer said existing diagnostic methods have limited sensitivity against the Bundibugyo strain due to differences in viral proteins compared with the more common Zaire strain, creating challenges for early detection and outbreak management.

Development work has begun, with materials on-site to support Optimer discovery and development. The company develops synthetic alternatives to antibodies for life sciences applications, with revenues generated through discovery programmes and a pipeline of proprietary therapeutic assets.
